Germiston was established in the early days of the gold rush when two prospectors, namely John and Jack struck paydirt on the farm of 'Elandsfontein'. This in turn attracted supporting commerce and increasing population. Both men made fortunes and the Town sprung up, next to the Mine.

The Library opened its doors to the Public in 1890, operating from several short-lived spaces provided, until a site was acquired in Kerk Street where it would stay for 40 Years. The first Building, a corrugated iron structure, was replaced by a new structure in 1898. In 1923 the subscribers agreed to cede the Library to the Johannesburg Town Council, and it became a free lending Library. A new Building was erected, READ IN FURTHER READ on the Market Square site – completed in 1935.

Rajaluxmi Pillay (also known as Rajes) was born in 1944 in Pietermaritzburg and grew up in Kimberley. She studied in Britain between 1963 and 1966, before returning to South Africa and settling in Durban. She continued her studies at the University of Natal, where she became assistant secretary to the Students Representative Council (SRC) and came under the influence of activists such as Paul David, Steve Biko and Ben Ngubane.

Vredehoek is a hillside neighbourhood at the base of Devil’s Peak. The stairways here were built in the early twentieth Century to connect homes to streets and tram stops. At the time, the steep terrain made stairways essential for daily life.
