The Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) is a spectacular 350 kilometre long Valley stretching from Montagu in the West, to Uniondale in the East, and is almost completely surrounded by Mountains.

In 1908, Gottlieb Redecker was the official builder of the German Colonial Government’s Works Department, drew up plans for a new Post Office building in Keetmanshoop. Although Keetmanshoop already had a Post Office at that stage, it was no longer able to serve its purpose effectively because the Village was expanding very quickly with its new status as a Railway Junction and the Military and Administrative Capital, for the South.

In Afrikaans it means: 'Kruger's Town, falling under the municipality known as: 'Mogale City'. Krugersdorp was essentially a mining town, regarded as the industrial hub of Western Gauteng.

Germiston was established in the early days of the gold rush when two prospectors, namely John and Jack struck paydirt on the farm of 'Elandsfontein'. This in turn attracted supporting commerce and increasing population. Both men made fortunes and the Town sprung up, next to the Mine.

The Library opened its doors to the Public in 1890, operating from several short-lived spaces provided, until a site was acquired in Kerk Street where it would stay for 40 Years. The first Building, a corrugated iron structure, was replaced by a new structure in 1898. In 1923 the subscribers agreed to cede the Library to the Johannesburg Town Council, and it became a free lending Library. A new Building was erected, READ IN FURTHER READ on the Market Square site – completed in 1935.
