GLOSSARY OF PEDI ARCHITECTURAL TERMS

Dikgeru. (sePedi). Pathway leading up to an entrance.

Dikokwane. (sePedi). Timber post.

Dipallo. (sePedi). A batten.

Hlaka. (sePedi). Tie beam.

Lebato. (sePedi). A raised earthern floor.

Leferwana. (sePedi). A sleeping space in an enclosed verandah.

Lemati. (sePedi). Door.

Leojwana. (sePedi). A storage space set in an open verandah.

Ka Sebeso. (sePedi). A hearth.

Kgokeletso. (sePedi). Dowel set into the lower end of the beam, which is then set to rest upon the ring beam.

Lefe. (sePedi). Smooth-style thatching, also known as Boer-style thatching.

Loala. (sePedi). A grindstone, which, in Pedi architecture, was often located in the shadow of the verandah.

Mahlomo. (sePedi). A timber rafter, also used to denote the whole roof frame

Mathudi. (sePedi). A verandah.

Modi. (sePedi). Thongs binding the grass apex.

Mogaolo. (sePedi). Internal shelf or seat.

Mojako. (sePedi). Doorway.

Moto. (sePedi). Generic term for a wall.

Motoana. (sePedi). Seat on an external wall.

Nkosini. (sePedi). Door frame.

Nnoko. (sePedi). A finial, also used to denote a center post or king post

Ntlhohlo. (sePedi). Roof apex or thatch top-knot.

Thapalego. (sePedi). Ring beam.
