One of the first-string accused in the Treason Trial of 1956-1961, Selepe was born in 1919 and served in the South African army in World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the Springbok Legion and of the African National Congress. At the time of his arrest for treason, he was living in Dube Township in Johannesburg and working as an insurance agent.
