26 October 1989
During the celebration day of independence not recognised by the international community, the President of the Transkei homeland, Tutor Ndamase, announced that his homeland government plans to unban the African National Congress (ANC) and the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC). The previous government of Kaiser Matanzima, banned the two parties for their opposition to the creation of this homeland. Moreover, because the Transkei was an Apartheid structure used to undermine and suppress opposition against Apartheid government, it followed the South African policy of banning political opposition.
