Three years before his death Moses Kotane, member of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the African National Congress (ANC), was awarded the ANC's highest honour of Isitwalandwe/Seaparankoe. The ceremony to honour him with this award coincided with his 70th birthday celebration. It was held in Moscow where he had been hospitalised since 1969.
