Former president Nelson Mandela was admitted to Mediclinic heart hospital in Pretoria on the 8th of June 2013 for a recurring lung infection. His condition was described as serious and there were times where his condition was unstable. Mandela received medical support from a variety of health professionals including a large medical team from the military. On 1st September 2013, Mandela was discharged from the Pretoria hospital. He was moved to his Houghton home in Johannesburg where he received 24 -hour intensive care from 22 doctors. Three months after Mandela’s discharge from hospital his condition once again became critical and unstable and he passed away on the 5th of December 2014.
