For the month of August 2016, in honor of women, South Africa History Online (SAHO) began collaborating with Artthrob in an effort to highlight women artists who were active in the resistance as well as those currently pushing notions of visual culture for the new South Africa. These women, Berni Searle, Jane Alexander, Jo Ractliffe, Mary Sibande, Penny Siopis, Zanele Muholi have throughout the years continued to challenge themselves and their position in the field of visual arts as well as in society. They represent some of the best contemporary art in the world and are from South Africa.
Going forward SAHO will add biographies of both men and women contemporary South African visual artists here in an effort to continually promote the commitment of those in cultural fields.
