Declared a National Heritage Site by the South African Government, Mqhekezweni is a very significant early great place of the Abathembu nation under King Dalindyebo, it was the home of the regent King Jongintaba Mtirara who took responsibility in grooming the young Nelson Mandela after the death of his father. "Mqhekezweni was a mission station of the Methodist Church and far more up to date and Westernised than Qunu.
