The United Democratic Front criticized the police actions at a Guguletu Funeral and made a call for police to stay away from funerals. This was requested by community members together with the UDF executive after the incident, which resulted in a coffin being dropped. The police denied that they were responsible for actions of brutality, ironically saying that they only intervened at funerals when they saw African National Congress flags displayed, people giving the black power salute and crowds of people singing freedom songs.
