Mcunu attended Ohlanga High School. In 1985 he received informal training in art at the Community Arts Workshop, Durban. In 1987 he was awarded a bursary by the Daily News to study art Fine Art at the Technikon Natal. He 1985 he exhibited at the NSA Gallery.
In 1991 he painted a mural at Hebox, Hammarsdale and another for Gadaleni High School, Isandhwana, and in 1992 a mural for Ilanga.
In 1990 he went to the Institute of Contemporary Art, London, to take part in the Zabalaza Festival which comprised giant murals which depicted scenes from rural villages and townships and SA. He is represented in public and private collections in SA.
