Elizabeth Mbatha was born in 1950 near Rorke's Drift. Mbatha did not attend school. In 1974 she married Eric Mbatha, a potter at Rorke's Drift. In the early 1980s she went to Rorke's Drift to look for work in the female-dominated weaving workshop. There was no vacancy there so she joined the pottery workshop and was taught traditional coil pottery by women potters such as Dinah Molefe. Her work has been widely exhibited.
