Bus drivers, who were members of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU), a COSATU affiliate, went on strike because of lack of protection from Inkatha supporters. Between May 1987 and February 1988 about eight TGWU bus drivers of the Sizanani MaZulu Transport Company and members of TGWU, were allegedly attacked by Inkatha supporters, causing the death of four drivers. Arranged police and South African Defence Force (SADF) protection proved to be inadequate. The SADF provided protection for only three days, while the police reported that they could not 'cope'.
