Ahmad Mahir Pasha, the Egyptian Prime Minister, is assassinated

Ahmad Mahir Pasha, the Egyptian prime minister, was assassinated in parliament following his announcement that Egypt was declaring war on the Axis powers. The incident happened in the Egyptian parliament while he was presenting the proposal to declare war. He was only four months in office when he was assassinated, having come to power in October 1944. Ahmad Mahir, the son to Muhammad Mahir, was one of the most important figures in the early history of the Wafd party in Egypt. The Wafd party came to prominence in Egyptian politics after World War I and the Egyptian Revolution of 1919 under the leadership of Sa'd Zaghlul. Just under forty years later, yet another Egyptian Prime Minister Anwar Sadat was assassinated in 1981.
