Summary

British general, colonel and Governor at the Cape

British soldier, and Governor at the Cape from 1820-21. He named the burgeoning port of Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth in memory of the death of his wife. He committed suicide at Southampton in 1841. He was then a general, and colonel of the 11th Foot Regiment.
