Looking After Freedom - ending 16 June

Looking After Freedom is curated by Raél Jero Salley and Nkule Mabaso, this exhibition displays contemporary, “decolonizing” art practices by African artists and reflects on their influence internationally.

The exhibition, which takes place from 23 May 2017 - 16 June 2017 at the Michaelis Galleries, aims to address a vacuum in art criticism, curatorial practice, and art theory, and will give visibility to artistic practices that escape the grasp of art history.  Looking After Freedom offers a sampling of artists working in photography, video, and other experimental media.  Among the artists included are  Dineo Seshee Bopape, Thembinkosi Goniwe and Kemang Wa Lehulere, alongside artists on the rise such as Skhumbuzo Makhandula and MadeYouLook.
