The Old Durban Central Prison no longer exists, but it was used extensively during the earlier apartheid period to house political dissidents. The former location of the prison is on the corner of Walnut Rd and Dr AB Xuma St (formerly Commercial Road), and it is now one of thirty sites on Durban's Struggle Heritage Route. Some of the colourful murals painted on the former prison walls were painted by Khela Ngobese.
