The building was designed by architect Carl Otto Hager, whose plans were later revised by AH Reid of Port Elizabeth. The cornerstone was laid on 16 August 1884, and the building was consecrated on 20 June 1885. It was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 27 May 1988.
