The Drostdy was erected during General Jacob Glen Cuyler’s tenure of office as Landdrost of Uitenhage in 1809 and follows the historical development of Uitenhage and surrounding districts. It houses exhibitions on toys, porcelain, clothing and an archive library.

It was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 10 November 1978.
