Thomas Kgope was born on 10 April 1954 in Rustenburg, Transvaal. Kgope met Norman Catherine while he was working as an electrician on the latter's new studio. Kgope was injured when he fell from the second floor of Catherine's studio and subsequently stayed with Catherine periodically until 1987. As Kgope showed an interest in art, Catherine gave him some materials and demonstrated basic techniques. Kgope continues to work as an electrician.
