It was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 21 September 1962.

A part of the Cape Town Campus of UCT- Hiddingh Hall. This was the original "home" of the University of Cape Town. The Hiddingh Campus now houses the University's Drama School, the Michaelis School of Fine Art and the Little Theatre, among other facilities.
