This unique sanctuary is the residence of more than 170 different species and provides a protective roosting place and breeding ground for thousands of birds within the city boundaries of Pretoria. It was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 11 April 1980.
The reserve was named after ornithologist-mammalgist, J Austin Roberts, born in Pretoria in 1883, and largely self-taught. He was to produce a number of standard South African reference books on both birds and mammals, and was tragically killed in a motor accident in 1948.
