Namedi Mphahlele was banished on 19 February 1953 from his residence in Pietersburg District, [Northern] Transvaal [now Polokwane, Limpopo Province]to the Nkandhla District, Natal [now KwaZulu-Natal].

The order was withdrawn on 18 September 1962.

Livingstone Mqotsi (Livie) was born in the village of Rabula in the Keiskammahoek district in the former Ciskei, now Eastern Cape, on 18 April 1921.

Alfred Msutu was appointed Chief of Tyefu Location in the Peddie district, [Eastern Province, now Eastern Cape] in January 1905.  He was, however, suspended four times between 1920 and 1933 for ‘undermining authority and other alleged misconduct,’ and, between 1933 and 1952 for his stance of non-cooperation with the authorities led to repeated suspensions.

William Mtsologane was one of the six along with Jeremiah Rakoko Mabe, accused of various offences arising from conflict in Mabieskraal (Pilansberg), Rustenburg District, Transvaal (now North West Province).

According to documentation related to Ngoza Mvelase’s banishment, community conflict in the Msinga District, Natal [now KwaZulu-Natal] in previous years resulted in 40 deaths, the burning of over 1,000 huts and the theft of more than 500 livestock. 

Rebecca Bunting (nee Notlowitz) was one of the founders of the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA) in the 1920s. She was a Jewish immigrant from the Baltic who came to South Africa on the eve of the First World War.

In December 1916, Rebecca married Sidney Percival Bunting. They had two sons– Arthur and Brian.

 Mark Shinners grew up in Attridgeville in Pretoria. He became involved in politics as a teenager and joined the Pan Africanist Congress(PAC).

Mhlabunzima Maphumulo was born on 6 September 1949 and not much is known on the location of his birth or his childhood. At the age of 24, Maphumulo inherited the role of Chief of the Maphumulo tribe from his father. The territory which his chieftaincy encompasses contained 35, 000 people at the time.

Phathekile Holomisa was born on 26 August 1959 in the Eastern Cape. He went to the University of Natal during the mid 1980’s where he received a Bachelor of Law. During that time, he also obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Transkei.
