Pretoria, now known as Tshwane

The Administrative capital of South Africa, Pretoria, or the 'Jacaranda City' is best known for its annual display of purple flowers in October. Located in the Northern part of Gauteng, Pretoria is the Historic centre of Government, in the former ZAR. Pretoria is now known as Tshwane which is named after; the Tswana/Ndebele Chief Tshwane.

Pretoria stretches along both sides of the Apies River and extends into the Western Hills, of the Magaliesberg on the East. Founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, son of Andries Pretorius, (the Boer statesman for whom the City was named after). Then becoming: the Capital of the Transvaal in 1860; administrative capital of South Africa in 1910; and a City in 1931. During the South African War (1899–1902), Winston Churchill was imprisoned there in 1899, until his escape.


The Vereeniging Peace Agreement document, ending the war between the Boers and the British, was signed at Pretoria’s gracious; Melrose House, on 31 May 1902. Then formally announced on 2 June 1902 in front of the 'Raadzaal' in Pretoria. (The chief architectural glory of Pretoria is the 'Raadzaal', or Government Buildings, which occupies one side of Church Square.)  Alfred Milner, the High Commissioner for South Africa and Governor of Transvaal and Orange River Colony was responsible for the design and execution of the policy of South Africa until 1905.
