Travelling in a cab no longer in fashion

This Day in History: 19 February 1898
The Star reported that travelling in a cab was falling out of favour. This trend was attributed to the changing socio-economic conditions in Johannesburg and the discomfort of travelling in a cab. After 1892 a popular mode of transport was horse-drawn trams, while electric trams were introduced in March 1906, travelling from the town centre to Siemert Road in Doornfontein. The first car appeared on the streets in 1897.
