This Day in History: 23 January 1999
Sifiso Nkabinde, former Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Natal Midlands and at the time of his death secretary-general of the recently formed United Democratic Movement, was shot dead outside Bridgeway Supermarket in Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal. He was a self admitted 'warlord' terrorising the Richmond area. His death triggered the murder of eleven members of the rival ANC by gunmen linked to Kabinde on the same day.
