Ruben Xulu was a sculptor who specialized in wood and stone. He was born deaf on 10  May 1955.   His disability was never a hindrance. Throughout his career, his subject matter was solely religious for missions in Natal. Xulu eventually left Hlabisa mission station, where he had learned to carve and moved to several mission stations in Natal. He died on 15 December 1985 at Mariannhill, where he worked under Sister Johanna Sen.
