During the Siege of Mafeking (presently known as Mafikeng) in the Second Anglo-Boer War, two Black cattle-herds were captured and summarily executed near Mafeking by burghers, in accordance with a council of war decision on cattle-rustlers. President Paul Kruger immediately repudiated this decision and ordered this practice to cease forthwith.
