Clergyman, teacher, politician and president of the African National Congress (ANC) Zaccheus Richard Mahabane, who combined politics and Christian ethics to fight racism, was born in Thaba Nchu, Orange Free State (OFS). As politician Mahabane tried to achieve Black unity and during the 1950s he was concerned with the problems of Christianity and its place in Africa. He died in Kroonstad (OFS), where he had lived and worked for most of his life, in September 1971.
