This Day in History: 18 August 1995
Violent overnight storms triggered flash floods in the Marrakesh region of Morocco. The storms overflowed three rivers Gigaya, Ourika and Gamat. The floods also resulted in mudslides cutting out roads linking Marrakesh and other areas. The death toll was reported by the country’s Interior Ministry to be 73 and possibly rising. Entire villages, livestock and campsites were swept away in the floods. Rescue operations were organised by the government.
