The government appointed Cillié Commission of Inquiry into the uprisings in Soweto on 16 June, 1976, held its first public hearing in Johannesburg. Evidence was taken on the extent of the damage and of casualties. The commission later put the death toll at 575 and blamed the police for 451 of those deaths. It also concluded that 2,389 people were injured during the uprisings between June 16, 1976, and Feb. 28, 1977.
