Charles “Charlie” Barends was born in Johannesburg on 24 September 1919. [i]Charlie was a jockey for 32 years, and rode 2 300 race winners [ii] Charlie only rode one July Handicap winner in 27 starts, and he won the Gold Cup seven times. [iii] He had sequential victories with a horse named Chez Monty in 1949 and 1950. [iv]
