British pop star, David Essex, claims he is quoted out-of-context about his return to South Africa to perform to a racially exclusive audience In an exclusive interview with Peter Feldman on 27 February 1985, David Essex, a British pop star claimed that he was quoted out-of-context by British Press about his return to South Africa to perform to a racially exclusive audience. The singer was speaking in relation with the issue of the United Nations (UN) blacklist and on whether he'll return to South Africa. During a telephonic interview with Feldman Essex said "I thought it right to play there and thanks to the fans for their support. After, all fans are fans and personally, I see no difference in playing to British or South African fans. Of course there are many things I don't like about the system there, but there are things I don't like about Britain as well." According to Essex, there was a clause in the contract which specified that there was going to be a multi-racial audience
