Augustine Makalakalane, former SA National soccer team player is born

Augustine Makalakalane is a former soccer player who later became a coach. He spent most of his soccer career playing midfield for Cosmos, though he also had stints with Sundowns and international teams like FC Zurich and FC Baden. He was one of the first few players to play for the national team, affectionately known as Bafana Bafana at a time when South Africans were still warming up to the idea of competing on the international stage. Makalakalane went on to become coach of the women’s national team Banyana Banyana. In 2010, allegations of sexual harassment against Makalakalane surfaced. Some of the players alleged that Makalakalane would ask for sexual favours in return for a place in the team and that he discriminated against the homosexual players.  Makalakalane’s contract with SAFA had a clause that required him to qualify Banyana for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup for his contract to be renewed.  Banyana Banyana failed to qualify for the World Cup and SAFA did not renew his contract.
