Archbishop Tutu retires as Archbishop of Cape Town and head of the Anglican Church in SA

This Day in History: 23 June 1996
A service in Cape Town's St George's Cathedral marked the retirement of the Most Reverend Desmond Tutu as Archbishop of Cape Town and head of the Anglican Church in South Africa. However, he remained chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). According to him, his retirement was a way of off-loading some of the work he had been doing in order to concentrate on the TRC and to ensure that the process ran smoothly. Tutu is currently Professor of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
