Archbishop Mpilo Desmond Tutu, chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, is born in Klerksdorp, Transvaal Archbishop Mpilo Desmond Tutu, former secretary of the South African Council of Churches, Nobel Peace Prize winner and first Black Archbishop of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa in Cape Town (thereby leader of the Anglican Church in South Africa), was born in Klerksdorp, Transvaal (now North West). Tutu is best known for his role as chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and for his belief in the possibility of ultimate racial harmony in South Africa.
