Post-structuralist discourse has resulted in a shift in emphasis from the author to the reader, or the production of art to its reception. Reception/perception problematises issues surrounding the discipline of art history and art criticism, the latter being a field still strongly underdeveloped in South Africa and particularly Africa. Papers could also explore a changing perception of the significance / insignificance of particular artists, art works, and art movements in South Africa and elsewhere. Other issues can include how the reception of art has influenced the production of art in both a historical and contemporary perspective. An investigation into the value and meaning of reception/perception could also be explored from the perspective of the general public and the educational sector. A panel discussion on changes in the discipline of Art History and restructuring of departments will be envisaged at this conference.
