Francois Roux was born in 1927 at Fort Victoria, Masvingo, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He attended the Boys High School, Stellenbosch from 1940 to 1946.
In 1946, he studied at the Camberwell School of Art, London and travelled in Europe completing his studies in painting at the Royal Academy Schools, London in 1951. He qualified with a Diploma in Painting from the Royal Academy Schools, London. While he was in London, he participated in several group exhibitions. Returning to Zimbabwe he showed at the annual exhibitions held at the Rhodes Gallery. In 1967, he moved to South Africa with his wife Margaret and sons Paul and Theunis. They settled in Rosebank, Cape Town, in the Cape Province.
Roux, a master draughtsman, is known as a painter of landscapes, portraits and plant studies and devoted his artistic career to developing his methods of observation using oils, tempera, watercolour, chalk and charcoal.
From 1970 to 1978, Roux served as a part time lecturer in painting at the Cape Technikon and continued to teach from his home in 1978. He is known for his public commissioned works of portraits of the Mayor of Cape Town, the Headmaster, Diocesan College, Cape Town (both in 1982) and J P du Toit, the Speaker of the Houses of Parliament, Cape Town in 1983.
