Tito Mboweni was born on 16 March 1959, in Tzaneen Limpopo. After completing his high school studies, he registered for a Bachelor of Commerce Degree at the University of the North (now University of Limpopo). However, he went into exile in Lesotho in 1980, before he could complete his studies. While in Lesotho, he joined the ANC and furthered his studies. He later went to England and obtained a Master of Arts Degree in Development Economics from the University of East Anglia. Mboweni was appointed Minister of Labour in 1994 in Nelson Mandela’s cabinet. In 1998, he joined the Reserve Bank as advisor to the Governor. He was appointed Governor in 1999 and served in this position until the end of his term and was succeeded by Gill Marcus in 2009. During his tenure, he was appointed honorary professor of Economics at the University of South Africa. Mboweni is currently the chairman of AngloGold Ashanti.
