George Pauling, builder of railway lines in SA, dies

George Craig Sanders Pauling was a British born engineer who built railway lines in South Africa, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and other Southern and Central African countries. He came to South Africa at the age of 20. His company Pauling and Co. was a major contributor in the development of railways in Southern and Central Africa. Though he expanded his business to countries abroad, such as Greece, India and China, it is Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) that he helped develop the most. Pauling, who worked together with Cecil John Rhodes, built bridges, tunnels, railways, and dams in Rhodesia. He died in 1919. His long standing company was dissolved in 2002.
