George Teboho Mokgalagadi, with his hair dyed golden, won a Paralympic world record gold medal 100m sprint in his first international competition at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece. He fell to his knees in elation after equalling his own record of 13.07sec that he had set in his heat on the previous night. Mokgalagadi, a cerebral palsy athlete from Jagersfontein in the Free State Province, capped his performance at the games by also winning the 200m in 26,80sec on 26 September, another Paralympic record.
At the closing of the Athens Paralympics 2004 games, South Africa saluted its Amakrokokroko team, which ended in thirteenth place with a staggering fifteen gold medals, thirteen silver and seven bronze.
