16 November 1973
Dr. Beyers Naude, former Director of the Christian Institute, defied an order to appear before the parliamentary Schlebusch Commission. The reason for his refusal was that the commission was not open to the public. This commission was set up to investigate the Christian Institute, the University Christian Movement (UCM), the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS) and the Institute of Race Relations. In October 1975 he was convicted by the Pretoria Regional Court for his defiance and was fined R50, 00 or one month in prison. On 28 October 1976, he was arrested for refusing to pay the fine.
