Derek Hanekom, former minister of the Department of Agriculture and Land Affairs was born in Cape Town. He was apponited Agricultural ministry by South Africa first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela after 1994 general elections. His appointment to the ministry could best be explained as a compensation for his contribution to the liberation struggle.
