The Mandela House Museum in Soweto is housed in what was once the home of Nelson Mandela, the World's most famous political prisoner and South Africa's former president. Soweto was an important location of the struggle, against apartheid, and Mandela's house seems an appropriate site for a Museum that charts the long, hard-fought path to democracy.
Nelson Mandela lived with his first wife, Evelyn, and later with his second wife, Winnie, in this four-room house, just off Vilakazi St. The museum includes interactive exhibits on the history of the house and some interesting family photos.
Nearby is the home of Archbishop Desmond Tutu (not open to visitors); Winnie Mandela has a property a short walk away, too.
