Koringberg, one of many in the areas to have its roots in the church. It was only when the community broke away from the Dutch Reformed church in neighbouring towns Moorreesburg and Hopefield that it formed an identity of its own and became known as: 'Koringberg'. This peaceful village was originally named after Warren’s Camp, on the farm: 'Brakwater' in 1923, after the resident engineer responsible for laying the railway line in the early 19th Century. It is essentially a wheat and sheep farming town, but the area also boasts well-known grape farms and a horse stud farm. The name is Afrikaans and it means: 'wheat mountain'.

Horse riding, hiking and mountain biking trails wind through the rugged but beautiful surroundings. The area has also grown in popularity among paragliders. Misverstand Dam on the Berg River is about 16km from Koringberg and offers canoeing, swimming, fishing and water skiing. One can also take a sunset boat trip down the river with its abundance of birdlife.

Koringberg is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The Koringberg Mountain Biking Trail is a famous challenge that rewards riders with panoramic views of the Cederberg and Winterhoek Mountains.

For those seeking a slower pace, the "middle of nowhere" feeling makes it perfect for stargazing, hiking, or simply escaping the city rush.
Swartland Wheat Fields

For those who would prefer to do it on foot, there is a 5 kilometre hiking trail to the top of Koringberg, where the vistas include Table Mountain on a good day, the Cederberg and Winterhoek Mountains in the distance. Other activities include water sports at Misverstand Dam, fly-fishing on the Berg River and the Swartland Wine Route.
