Govan Mbeki Local Municipality is situated in the Gert Sibande District Municipality in Mpumalanga Province.
Mbeki died in Port Elizabeth on 30 August 2001. He was given a state funeral during his son Thabo Mbeki's presidency, on 8 September 2001. Govan Mbeki's remains were the subject of controversy in 2006 when plans were made to exhume them, together with Raymond Mhlaba's remains, and place them in a museum.
It has a population around 310,000 (2022), with key stats showing ~25% under 15, ~70% working age, and a ~43% dependency ratio, facing challenges with high unemployment (youth ~34.4% in 2011) and significant service delivery issues, particularly in water/electricity loss, debt collection (over 300 days average to pay creditors), and overall financial health, despite efforts toward a "Model City of Excellence" vision.
