The government building complex was completed in 1877 although its Volksraad Chamber was already in use on 31 May 1875. In 1895 the upper storey was completed and in 1902 the architectural firm of Herbert Baker & Masey made small alterations to the building. In October 1908 a part of the complex burnt down after which it was restored by architect Taylor, after plans by Herbert Baker. It was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 21 April 1972.
