Du Toit, a prolific author, wrote the first Afrikaans history book and as an Afrikaner nationalist he became one of the founders of the Afrikaans language movement. In a series of articles published in Die Afrikaanse Patriot, he pushed for the formation of a cultural and political organisation that became known as the Afrikaner Bond. However his close friendship with Rhodes soon became controversial and he was stuck off the roll of the Bond.
