5th Jozi Book Fair
Khanya College invites you to the 5th Jozi Book Fair taking place from 25-26 October 2013 at Museum Africa in Newtown, Johannesburg.
This is the fair for readers, writers, small publishers, children, youth, activists and the public! The theme of the Fair is ‘Reading the word and the world: the role of libraries’ and we will have a Conference on the theme before the Fair. The Fair is a project of Khanya College.
The two-day Fair includes 101 different activities and is anchored by over 50 local authors and artists. Activities include workshops, seminars, book launches and conversations with authors, art exhibitions, film screenings and the Marikana Photo Exhibition.
This year, we also have 10 international guests. The Guest of the Fair is renown publisher, children’s author and human rights activists, Walter Bgoya, from Tanzania. He is joined by African intellectual, Prof. Issa Shivji, and educator, Pili Dumea, from Children’s Books. From Sweden, we have the Reading Ambassador, Johan Unenge, and the Gothenburg Book Fair (with whom we have a cultural exchange programme), the Workers Education (ABF) and the Transport Union.
Although geared to the public in general, there are programmes for children, schools (Friday), teachers and principals, publishers and librarians. This includes a workshop to ‘Make publishing more accessible to working people’ with Anton Harber and a Public Seminar on ‘Reviving African Intellectualism in the context of neoliberalism’ by Prof. Shivi - both events take place in the run up to the Fair. Other round tables include ‘Land struggles in Africa today’ and ‘Whither South Africa?’, in the context of the forthcoming elections.
The activities are geared to encourage reading among people of all age groups: a workshop on ‘from literature to hip hop’, an encounter to ‘encouraging pregnant mums to read to their unborn child’, and ‘playing with language’ for children celebrate the diversity of languages in this country. The National Children’s Theatre will also stage their production of 'Seussical Jr'.
The focus on women includes a roundtable on ‘Women, masculinity and power in SA’, that takes stock of the conditions of the women and the women’s movement against the backdrop of increasing violence against women (and sex scandals!). Women writers discuss writing lesbian erotica (Dolar Vasani), crime fiction (Angela Makholwa), blogging and domestic violence (Shafinaaz Hassim), while others moderate workshops on writing and illustrating for children, for adults. There will be conversations with authors such as Ronnie Kasrils about his book 'Armed and Dangerous'.
Various research reports are also made more accessible in seminars on household surveys, (Chris Hani Institute), communities and mining (Benchmarks) and the challenges facing young people to read in Sweden, Tanzania and South Africa (although the sources may differ).
The Documents of the Social Movements: the Anti Privatisation Forum will be launched at the Fair. The APF was one of the largest social movements in SA and there are many lessons to gain.
