This Day in History: 20 June 2002
The United States (US) shut down its embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, after a terrorist threat. Following the threat, the US and British governments warned their citizens to postpone their travelling to East Africa, especially to Kenya. A new embassy building in Nairobi had been opened on March 3 2002, after a bomb had destroyed the original structure, killing 219 people and injuring more than 5,000 others in August 1998.
